During the Board Meeting in January 2024, the Board of Directors for Brave Hearts for Strong Minds elected four new members.
We welcome Denise Dotzman and Judi Schmitz as voting Board Members.
Denise Dotzman is the mother of our 2022 recipient, Denny. She lost her husband, Andrew, to Brain Cancer in 2021. Denise is eager to help continue the mission, bringing her years of experience in management to our organization.
Judi Schmitz is a retired school counselor who worked extensively with children and families dealing with grief, loss, and trauma. Judi has been a strong advocate for children with their education, social-emotional growth, and career development.
Introducing our Non-Voting Youth Representatives
During the Board Meeting, the Board also ratified an update to the organization’s Bylaws, which included the addition of a non-voting Youth Representative position. This role with the Board is to help continue to engage our older recipient children during their High School and College careers. The board elected Noella Carlo and Matthew DiGiacomo, Jr. to the roles.
Noella Carlo is our 2015 recipient, along with her brother David. She suddenly lost her father in August 2014. Noella is excited to use her personal experience to provide support to future families.
In 2014, Matthew DiGiacomo, Jr. and his siblings were recipients of the 3rd Annual Walk. After losing his Dad, Matthew Sr., in 2011, Matthew has dedicated himself to becoming the best student and athlete, working to pay forward the kindness shown to him.

Thank you
Many thanks also go to our Board Members who have stepped into an Advisory role: Joseph Spause, Edward Fabian, and Dan Smith. Their many years of dedication have resulted in the sustainability and growth of Brave Hearts over the last 12 years. They, along with many others, are the reason our organization exists. With their leadership, we have raised over $435k in 529 education plan funds for thirteen families and thirty-one children. All of our community members are thankful for their dedication to being brave.
