Brave Hearts for Strong Minds (BHSM) is a 501(c)(3) approved organization (EIN 45-3973220) that provides college education funding for children who have lost a parent.

Our mission started in 2012 after a beloved community member, Tom Reilly, suddenly passed away, leaving behind his wife and four young children. Tom was a man who gave his all to the community, and in his honor, we strive to continue that tradition of care for others. Our logo was inspired by his musical and carpentry skills, while also highlighting his generous heart, which he showed to those in need. What makes us unique is our “pay it forward” model, which requires all children who receive assistance to pay it forward by fundraising and organizing events for future families. Each year, these families return with a stronger desire to create positive change for others who are going through a similar loss.

Children who have lost a parent face immense and lasting emotional and social hurdles. One of the key struggles for families that have lost a loved one is the ability to provide for the children’s education. Reflecting on Tom’s compassion and friendship, our organization developed a way to provide opportunities for children in need by raising 529 education plan funds.

Pictured below are our recipient families. Their lost loved ones personified everything that prompted us to start Brave Hearts For Strong Minds: they were caring, loving, and supportive parents, who had a contagious attitude of living their lives for others. With their passing, the families have been left with a vast void. We cannot fill that void, but we can offer these children the tireless support of our community.

If you know of a family that has lost a parent, please have them apply by completing the information on the Nominate a Family form.
